Sing Along

Haus am Steinberg Goslar

How can I join?

You are keen to experiment and you have choir experience or conduct a chorus? And you want to discover new potential of your voice? Then you might be interested in participating in one of the project weeks.

The European Overtone Choir is a project with workshop character. Twice a year you have the opportunity to join with 20-40 other interesting people from Europe for a week to dive deeply into the world of harmonics in the choral sound. Overtone singing experience is not required but is of course welcome. In addition to rehearsals, there are offered workshops  in the afternoons where you can learn a lot about overtone singing. The choir directors reserve the right to cast certain pieces of the program parts individually.

In the European Overtone Choir the overtones are at the heart of the music and of the vocal and choral sound work. Our concerts showcase both choral works that were written expressly for overtone singing, and classical choral music of various genres. Also choral improvisations and soundscapes are brought to the stage. Some works have been written especially for the EOC and will be premiered by us.

We sing mostly from scores. Some pieces are composed conventionally, others require overtone singing of varying degrees of difficulty. Simple overtone parts can easyly be sung by every choir singer without any prior knowledge. Singers without overtone singing experience can either learn basics of overtone singing in the afternoon workshops or sing without overtones. More experienced overtone singers are given the opportunity to rehearse more complex overtone compositions in a chamber ensemble or to sing solo parts.

The overtone based work on the timbre and the vocal tuning plays a central role in the rehearsals and in the workshops. The aim of the choir is the development of the vocal sound of each singer and the whole choir sound. Characteristic of the choir is to experiment and to explore the limits of voice. The rehearsal of the pieces is therefore only one aspect of the choral work. Through daily intensive study of the overtones, attendees will gain an entirely new approach to their voice and to their way of listining. Just intonation and tone color in the light of the overtones get a new practical and intuitive meaning.

Schedule of a week of rehearsals

On the first day all new singers will be heard by our choir directors. So they can get an accurate picture of the group and give tips on vocal development. During the week it is possible that we sometimes rehearse in small groups.

We usually rehearse in the morning and evening with the entire choir. In the afternoon there are workshops on voice and sound color. Or basic techniques of overtone singing are taught, refined and applied in small groups.

The tradition also includes nightly jam sessions, trips and parties.
